Victor Wembanyama started his comeback after a two-game absence

It seems San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Vembanyama he can return to action soon after sustaining an injury on New Year’s Eve.

At the usual pre-match press conference before team’s game against the Portland Trail BlazersMitch Johnson said his All-Star center “looks really good” and is “doing well” when talking about his rehab.

“I expect them to travel to Memphis,” Johnson said, alluding to the team’s next game.

Wemby had already been ruled out for the Blazers game before the Spurs coach made his comments. The 7-foot-5 center did not travel with the team to Indianapolis for their context the night before.

Vembanjama suffered a left knee hyperextension in a win over the New York Knicks on the final night of 2025.

“We’ve said that from the beginning, it’s day-to-day, and it’s more than a few days away, so we’ll have to see how it goes,” Johnson added.

The The Spurs beat the Indiana Pacers 123-113 in his first game of the new year. The Blazers enter their game in San Antonio five games under .500.

Including the Portland contest, the 2023 first-round draft pick has missed 14 games this season. He averaged 24.3 points and 11.7 rebounds along with 2.9 blocks and 3.4 assists in less than 30 minutes per game. Those are averages that fell due to a minutes restriction after he returned from a month-long layoff with a calf strain in mid-December.

“We all want him to play,” Johnson said of his franchise cornerstone. “I know he’s biting, and we’re going to get him out as soon as we can without sacrificing or compromising anything.”

After winning 22 and 34 games in Wembley’s first two seasons, the Spurs are enjoying a surge to the top of the NBA standings. Only the Oklahoma City Thunder, whom San Antonio has beaten all three times they have metthey have a better record.
