Victor Wembanyama throws down a crazy dunk against the Jazz

The San Antonio Spurs have argued for the best team in the NBA after three straight wins against the Oklahoma City Thunder, including their Christmas matchup. The main reason the Spurs can make that claim is the continued rise of Victor Wembanyama as a franchise superstar. During the Spurs’ game against the Utah Jazz on Saturday, Wembley threw the crazy dunk so that no one could stop him.

Victor Wembanyama’s dunk came late in the fourth quarter as the Spurs tried to fight back against the Jazz. But it would end up falling apart as the Jazz were able to hang on and grab a 127-114 victory on the road. With the loss, the Spurs fell to 23-8 and snapped a five-game winning streak. In the loss, Vembanyama finished with 32 points, seven rebounds, three assists and five blocked shots in just over 27 minutes. He shot 12 of 21 (57.1 percent) from the field and a perfect 8 of 8 from the free throw line.

With the loss, the Spurs are now three games behind the Thunder for the top seed in the Western Conference standings. But they are just one game ahead of the No. 3 Denver Nuggets.

The Spurs have been something of a surprise team this season with a rapid rise among the West’s elite teams. I part of that rise this season came when Vembanyama was sent off due to a lower leg injury. But to truly compete against the league’s best, the Spurs will need their franchise star at his best.

Entering Saturday’s game, Vembanjama had appeared in 18 games with just over 30 minutes per game. He came off the bench 12 games after returning from injury, but returned with the starters against the Jazz.

He is averaging 23.4 points, 11.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.0 blocks while shooting 51.4 percent from the field, 37 percent from the 3-point line and 82.6 percent from the free throw line.
