Warriors, Pacers among Nick Claxton trade suitors before deadline

Brooklyn Nets center Nick Claxton is among the best big men in the trade market before the February 5 deadline. The Golden State Warriors and Indiana Pacers are among the teams for registration of interest in the 26-year-old, according to HoopsHipe’s Michael Scott.

“Several teams that have been interested. Right now, you’re looking at the Indiana Pacers, who are actively looking on the market in general to find an upgrade after losing Myles Turner. You’ve got the Golden State Warriors, who are also looking at different center options around the league. And there are other teams that are also looking at Nick,” Scotto said on the IES Network.

Claxton is having his best offensive season his career, he averaged 12.8 points and 4.1 assists on 58.8 percent shooting. The veteran is one of four centers averaging over 12 points and four assists per game with 50 percent or more, alongside Nikola Jokic, Alperen Sengun and Evan Mobley.

After a slow start defensively, he helped anchor a Nets unit that ranked first in the league in December.

The Pacers are in trouble this season with Tyrese Halliburton out. However, they will need to replace Myles Turner before next year, when they will aim to compete in the wide-open Eastern Conference.

Indiana has a bevy of draft picks and several mid-sized contracts to match Claxton’s $25.3 million salary in the trade — including Obi Taupin ($14 million), Benedict Maturin ($9.2 million), Isaiah Jackson ($7.6 million) and Jerash Walker ($6.7 million).

Meanwhile, the Warriors appear unlikely to make a trade at the deadline after Jimmy Butler tore his ACL at the end of the season. however, Clacton could offer a cheaper alternative as they aim to remain competitive around Stephen Curry.

Golden State has an obvious need to upgrade its center position, which currently houses Al Horford, Quinten Post and Trace Jackson-Davis.

The Nets have been linked to the Warriors in a three-team trade involving Jonathan Cumminga. Golden State could also match Claxton’s salary by using Moses Moody ($11.6 million), Buddy Hield ($9.2 million) and Horford ($5.7 million).
