Washington re-signs a key piece to a three-year, $9 million extension

The Washington Wizards are doing everything they can to start preparing for the future by overhauling the roster. The The Wizards also traded Anthony Davis and Trae Young this season, not to try to make a run, but to give them something to build on.
On Saturday, the Wizards continued their quest for improvement signing a two-way player on a three-year contract worth up to $9 million. Tristan Vukcevic is the Wizards’ big man on the rise, and Washington wasn’t going to let him go. Shams Charania was in the news.
“Washington Wizards sign two-way center Tristan Vukcevic to new three-year, $9 million deal, sources tell ESPN. Team option for third season. Wizards and agent of 7-footer Jason Wren of Wasserman reached new deal Saturday.”
Vukčević averaged 7.9 points per game this season and added 2.7 rebounds and 1.1 assists. The seven-footer has started five games this season and appeared in 35. His output is actually down from the previous two seasons. He averaged just 10 points per game last year with 9.4 and then averaged 8.5 in 2023. When in the game, the big man looks to score the stone. He is a career 32% shooter from beyond the arc and is shooting 48% from the floor. If he succeeds on defense, he can play more than 12.3 minutes per game.
Vukčević is a very efficient player. If you compare his numbers to him playing at least 32 minutes per game, he could score almost 30 points and roughly nine rebounds per game. The Wizards are counting on his improvement.
