Watch Kevin Durant connect with Patrick Ewing before the Knicks clash

Although it remains one of the best pure scorers in today’s game, Kevin Durant he knows he doesn’t have much time left in the NBA. He will soon be a legend who is forced to experience the sport away from the hardwood. When a player enters the twilight of their career, they tend to better appreciate those who came before them. The Houston Rockets superstar had to talk to such a person on the eve of Saturday’s showdown with New York Knicks.

Durant embraced Hall of Fame center Patrick Ewing at Madison Square Garden. “PG is the best,” the Knickerbockers great said on the ESPN X account, referring to the 37-year-old’s upbringing in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Ewing rose to fame in those parts, spending four years at Washington-based Georgetown University in the 1980s before later becoming head coach of the Hoyas.

Mutual respect flowed through MSG, as the two 7-footers shared a few words and a quick hug about an hour before the action began. They’ve both endured endless scrutiny, so they can probably relate to each other on a deeper level.

In 1985, Ewing was hailed as the savior of the Knicks, the man who rebuilt The Garden into a den of champions. New York reached the NBA Finals once and fell short of the Larry O’Brien trophy during the big man’s 15-year career with the franchise. Durant led the Oklahoma City Thunder in its infancy, but failed to reach its peak with what many consider the best team never to win a title. He was brutally maligned after leaving to join the Golden State Warriors in 2016.

Although Durant won two Finals MVP awards with the Dubs, many still underestimate his accomplishments as he moved to a super team. When people discuss either of these two NBA titans, they will inevitably use the words “but” or “what if.” That may never change, but they seem to be doing well.

Maybe Kevin Durant and Patrick Ewing can catch up a little more after the game.
