Watch out for a Klay Thompson buyout or trade this summer

When Klay Thompson signed with Dallas Mavericks In 2024, he felt he had put himself in a position to win a fifth championship. But now, Luka Doncic is gone, Anthony Davis played just 29 games before being traded, and Kyrie Irving is still recovering from knee surgery.
The Mavericks became a completely different unit two years after Thompson’s arrival. They are languishing in the bottom half of the standings at 19-35 and unlikely to return to the NBA Finals, which they reached the season before Thompson joined the team.
Dallas will continue to build around Cooper Flagg and find younger pieces for the future. For Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, that does not bode well for Thompson and other veterans.
“Other than (Daniel) Gafford, the only big name we need to keep an eye on, whether it’s an offseason buyout or a potential trade, is Klay Thompson,” Siegel told Clutch Scoops.
“Because he’s going to be in the last year of his contract, he doesn’t seem to fit into their timeline anymore, and he wants to be on a championship team. So I’d keep an eye on Klay Thompson, what happens with him come draft time.”

It’s not hard to imagine the 36-year-old Thompson playing for a new team next season. As Siegel mentioned, the Mavericks are moving in a different direction with the rapid rise of Flagg, making the older guys on the roster more expendable.
Doc Thompson is still one of the deadliest shooters in the NBA and was usable off the bench for the Mavericks, he was significantly slowed down by earlier injuries.
The four-time champion is averaging a career-low 11.6 points, 38.8% field goal percentage, 2.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 22.1 minutes per outing.
