Wembanyama says San Antonio proved one thing after beating the Pistons

San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Vembanyama he knows his team is still building towards something special. But thanks to a recent win against the Detroit Pistons, he’s not afraid to point it out his squad is on the right track.

“It was definitely a night where we confirmed the progress. And also confirmed the potential.”

In theirs first meeting this season against a franchise that entered the night with the fewest losses in the NBA and the best record in the Eastern Conference, Wemby’s Spurs won by 11 in Detroit. While impressive, it was the kind of effort Spurs’ leading scorer knew they were capable of.

“I don’t think it was a night where we learned the most about ourselves.”

Victor Wembanyama describes the big win against the Detroit Pistons

With three wins (in consecutive meetings) against the Oklahoma City Thunderas well as wins against all the other western powers, the Spurs have several contenders for their ‘best wins’ category.

“I think this is definitely the first five games. But, for the future, looking at the season as a whole, this is probably the team that is most capable of playing that way,” Vembanjama acknowledged the Pistons’ aggression.

“This is what they do,” continued the generational talent, “If they don’t want you to score, they won’t let you score. In the second half, both sides of the floor, but the whole game everyone was connected offensively and it shows in the stats. We have six players who shoot more than ten shots.”

“That’s why I also talked about progression, because everyone was connected,” Vembanyama added. “Everybody had to eat – you know what I mean – because we were so connected and because we were trying to fight against the wall the whole game.

As effective because the Spurs were offensive against Detroit, the NBA’s leading shot blocker made sure to highlight his team play at the other end likewise.

“I mean, the second half was pretty satisfactory defensively. And yeah, it was a tough shooting night.”

San Antonio has won each of its last nine games. It is the first time the proud franchise has won so many in a row since the 2018-2019 campaign. Truth be told, that’s easily the Spurs’ longest winning streak of the season. They are credited with winning their first eight straight games in December.

But that sequence didn’t take into account a defeat in the finals of the NBA Cup against the New York Knicks because the league does not include the Cup Championship competition in the standings and is therefore not shown in the win-loss record. That setback in New York came on a streak between five and three wins.

“I don’t agree that there is a formula for it,” said Vembanyama, not letting their current success get the best of them.

“I feel like the mistakes we made at the beginning of the season can help us with that, but we’ll have to confirm that,” concluded the first pick in the 2023 draft.

It seems like it is Spurs confirm how good they are with each passing game.
