Wembley fangirl goes viral for nickname ‘Hector Banana-bread’

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama may have a new fan nicknamewhether he likes it or not. His last name is notoriously difficult for many to grasp, but one fan’s viral rendition as “Hector Banana-Bread” sparked the birth of a new story that is likely to last.

The legend was born when the girlfriend of a 21-year-old fan told his girlfriend asked others for help in identifying him on reddit. She explained that she wanted to get her boyfriend Vembanyama’s jersey as a gift, but she forgot his name. The user stated that her boyfriend was a Los Angeles Lakers fan but lived in Texas as one of her clues to identify the mysterious banana bread basketball player.

“Here are some clues that might help,” wrote Reddit user Rafe_Cameron_OBKS. “This is pretty stupid, but I vaguely remember the player’s name sounding like ‘Hector Banana-Bread.’ However, if I google that name, I only get banana bread recipes, so the name is probably way off.

Through a painstaking process of elimination, the comments helped the user identify “Hector Banana-Bread” as Victor Vembanyama. However, that was just the beginning, as the Reddit thread went viral and spread across multiple platforms.

“Hector Banana-Bread” has hit both Instagram and X, formerly Twitter, and fans have already nicknamed Vembanyama. The 7-foot-3 star is already commonly referred to as “Wemby,” but there’s just something about “Hector Banana-Bread” that has a nicer ring to it.

Victor Wembanyama is yet to make his ‘Hector Banana-Bread’ debut

Since acquiring the new nickname, Victor Wembanyama and Spurs have yet to return to the pitch. Ironically, San Antonio was scheduled to face the Lakers in the game after he got his new nickname, the favorite team of his culprit’s boyfriend.

Unfortunately for “Banana-Bread” fans, the game in between The Lakers and Spurs were postponed because of the fire in Los Angeles. San Antonio has not played since Jan. 8, when it lost to the Milwaukee Bucks by 16 points. The Spurs and Lakers are scheduled to face each other on Monday, January 13th at Cripto.com Arena.

Spurs fans will certainly be hoping that “Hector Banana-Bread” has a better outing against the Lakers than Wembanyama did against the Bucks. The rising star managed just 10 points against Milwaukee as the entire team struggled to score. However, he still dominated on defense, recording 10 rebounds, three blocks and two steals in the game.

Halfway through the 2024-25 period, Vembanyama is favorite to win the Defensive Player of the Year award in April. He is looking to take the trophy from fellow Frenchman Rudy Gobert, who won his fourth DPOI award in 2024.
