What disappointed Mike Brown the most in the loss to the Magic

NEW YORK – It took 11 games to New York Knicks to lose at home in the 2025-26 season. The team snapped its 7-0 home record and five-game winning streak with a 124-107 loss to the Orlando Magic.
The Magic won despite losing Paolo Banchero in the second quarter. Jalen Brunson “turned the ankle,” says the head coach Mike Brownbefore fouling out and removing himself from the game. His 31-point performance made him the only Knick to score more than 15 on Wednesday.
Brown was blunt after the game, specifically during his signing address to kick off his postgame availability. He was discouraged by the mentality of his team.
“What I was most disappointed in was in the first half everything that happened on the field: we blamed the officials. And that was disappointing to see, because we were the ones to blame for a lot of things that happened on the floor.”
In the announcement of the Knicks coach, there was no comment on the trial itself. It just stated that the Knicks were in no position to appeal the calls, or lack thereof, as a team that didn’t manage what was in their own control.
The Knicks’ 2024 edition of the playoff series returns under a new coach
This was a problem for New York last season as well. After losing Game 2 of their first-round playoff series to the Detroit Pistons, several players talked about the immediate need for improvement. Josh Hart he said the team should control what they can, adding that he “reacted terribly” until now. He added that teammate Karl-Anthony Towns also needs to improve his response.
Brunson, the team captain, said the altercations with the officials resulted in a “lack of focus.” He stated that the team should focus on their own affairs and let the officials do their thing. The Knicks have 71 games before any potential postseason action, but they need Brown’s openly dismissive approach to this specific issue to take effect soon, especially with Brunson’s status in question.
“It doesn’t matter what the game is called if we’re locked in and playing the way we’re capable. We don’t have to rely on the officials to make this call or that call, so our focus in that area wasn’t where it needed to be,” said the team’s new head coach.
Mike Brown says self-inflicted wounds ended New York’s streak
After the team’s fourth loss, Brown added that the Knicks players themselves gave the referees a lot of work.
“Six of (the Magic’s) first eight points came from the free throw line. And we fouled ’em. I couldn’t even take advantage of the challenge because we fouled,” the coach told reporters after the game. Brown was almost venting, as if the media wanted to understand and share his frustration.
The 55-year-old coach also expressed his displeasure with his team’s lack of conviction to start the game. Brown noted that the way the Magic started the game pointed to those deficiencies, citing the opponents’ early free-throw success. The Magic scored four of their first six points with 23 seconds to play there.
“They came in and took the game away from us, starting with their physicality,” Brown admitted to the media on Wednesday night.
New York has allowed the Magic to “get comfortable with the way they play,” according to Brown. After the loss, the team was ranked 12th in defensive rating until Wednesday. Their overall offensive output, good for the third-best offensive rating behind the Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets, headlined their season.
It remains unknown how much Brunson’s injury affects his season and the Knicks’ chances. New York fans will be anxiously awaiting news regarding the health of their superstar. Their coach has put the ball in the players’ court in terms of the mentality with which they should approach adversity at a potentially opportune moment for the mood.
“If we’re a no-excuses team, we have to play the right way, the best we can, and not blame anything but ourselves. So it doesn’t matter if we play three games in a row, we have to figure it out.”
