What Grayson Allen had to say about the MVP chant during the historic 3-point blast

PHOENIX – Grayson Allen is perhaps best known for being Phoenix Suns‘ 3 point sniper. after all, Allen broke the Suns’ franchise record with 10 3-pointers in Monday’s 121-98 win over the New Orleans Pelicans.

Although he had career years shooting from beyond the arc in the Valley of the Sun, he took another step to his game – playmaking.

Excluding Monday’s game, Allen is averaging a career-high 4.7 assists per game. Not to mention, he’s been a key starter in relief with the second unit.

Is that a surprise? Not really, considering Allen was projected to have a breakout season with the Suns. Who mentioned this? Managing Director Brian Gregory.

11 games in, and the stats back it up, and the impact backs it up. With a new coach, a new system and a relatively new roster, change doesn’t happen overnight.

Still, Monday was a surreal moment. The “MVP” chant washed over him and made him think why was the night so special.

“Probably the MVP,” Allen said, smiling, when asked which he enjoyed more than the 42 points, 10 3-pointers or MVP chants. “I don’t know how many times it’s happened in my career. I’ll never take for granted the amount of support I have here from the fans. It’s great, it’s surreal, and it makes it a lot of fun to go out there.”

“It’s like this fan base has been so supportive. The last three years and even the first year here, this has been a place where I’ve never seen so many of my jerseys than all the other places. It’s been really cool.

Jordan Ott sees Suns game growing with Grayson Allen

What was originally supposed to be Jaylen Green and Devin Booker probably turned into the latter and Allen. That’s not to say that Allen is better than Green or that he can fill his exact role.

However, it states that Allen will have to be an extension of the offense once Booker is out. It can be said that he was exactly that.

At the same time, it caught the attention of head coach Jordan Ott.

While giving each player their flowers, Allen does things that don’t necessarily show up in the box score. He sets solid screens, sets the floor more than adequately, and uses his strength and that sudden stop on his drives as leverage.

The 42-point blast was not on the radar, Allen’s was confidence and level of difficulty he was definitely on those recordings.

“He just kicks it so far with ease,” Ott said after the game. “We’re trying to get him to shoot more; his career numbers are always high.”

“We want him to take some that he’s not really comfortable with all the time, but we know what he’s shooting … it’s great to see how his teammates have pushed for him. So humble, quiet, well-mannered, organized. He’s always another adult in the room, that’s nice to see.”

The Suns will hit the road to play the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday in the first set of a back-to-back. Allen’s hot 3-point shooting could continue
