What Jalen Wells thought was “ridiculous” in the midst of a 1,000-point success

Few moments in an NBA player’s career crystallize the payoff of relentless work and collective trust like a major milestone. Doc Jalen Wells is not immune to the beginning slowing down the Memphis Grizzlies this season, the sophomore passed the 1,000-point mark before Thanksgiving dinners cooled. Yet behind the stats is a humble competitor focused solely on winning, amusingly unaware that his girlfriend has been following the countdown and catching Pokémon on Reddit the entire time.
From the disciplined, low-revving approach that fuels playoff pressure to the unexpected joy of discovering your own viral meme universe, this is more than just a story about points on the board. It’s an insight into the balance of focus and fun that defines an up-and-coming player. Captain Sailin’ Wells leads the Grizzlies in scoring in the last five games after all. He is second in field goal percentage (64.4%) behind Zach Eddy and second in three-point shooting (57.5%), thanks to a red-hot Cam Spencer (62.5%, 4.8 3PA).
Reflecting on his 1,000-point moment with ClutchPoints, Wells highlighted the role his teammates played in his success after the road win over the New Orleans Pelicans.
“It was good that my teammates believed in me and still waved me the ball when I was open,” Wells began. “It’s great to have the trust of my teammates.”
Known for his defense, sharp shooting and disciplined play, Wells took credit for that in the offseason. Fortunately for the former second-round pick, Tuomas Iisal’s patience paid off on the offseason.
“It shows that the investment of work works. I worked hard on my shot,” emphasized Wells. “I believe it’s finally emerging.”
Unsurprisingly, Wales didn’t follow the numbers obsessively. That honor went to his girlfriend, who has been keeping a close eye on his progress over the last few games.
“My girlfriend has actually been following the 1,000-plus point thing the last few games,” Wells admitted. “I didn’t know I was there with the fastest ever and the fewest turnovers. That’s what I try to do is make winning plays. It starts with baskets, not turning the ball over.”
As the Grizzlies roll through the season, his low-turnover style has been a boon for a team looking to climb the Western Conference standings. But off the pitch, after the disappointment of last season’s play-off exit, Wales found something to lighten the mood.
“After we lost in the playoffs, I was just watching the games and I came across (Wellspost threads) on Reddit. I thought it was hilarious and I just keep seeing more and more,” Wells joked. “My girlfriend and I love watching them laugh. I have a couple saved on my phone that are pretty funny.”
These “Wellspost” threads, like “Jailen Swells/Gels/Intel” referred to themthey’ve clearly become a source of entertainment for the pair, blending his rising NBA profile with playful pop culture crossovers. As he continues to build on his early success, it is clear that Wales is not just focused on statistics. He embraces the travel, the work, and even the memes that come with it.
