What Mike Brown liked to see in a 25-point destruction of the Spurs

On Sunday afternoon, The New York Knicks picked up one of their most impressive wins of the season with a demolition of the San Antonio Spurs at home. The Spurs came into this game was riding an 11-game winning streak, but that flame was quickly extinguished by the Knicks’ defense, which came out in full force in this one.

After the game, the head coach Mike Brown became 100% real on what contributed to his team’s destruction of the Spurs.

“I thought our weak defense was really good,” Brown said, per James L. Edwards III of The Athletic on X, formerly Twitter, who noted that Brown “acknowledged the Spurs’ mistakes they were making, but Brown thought the streak defense and the on-ball defense was really good.”

Indeed, the Spurs missed countless open looks on Sunday afternoon, which played a big part in the Knicks’ defensive success against them. For the most part, though, New York did a solid job of countering superstar Victor Wembanyama while still staying at home on San Antonio’s outside shooters.

Meanwhile, the Knicks also overcame a rough start on offense to finish with a solid showing on that side of the ball.

“At the end of the day, making 48 3s was great. With Wemby in the paint, you have to shoot the ball,” Brown said.

Overall, defense has been one of the key reasons many skeptics have pointed to as to why the Knicks aren’t taken seriously as title contenders, and New York’s top two players — Jaylen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns — are both clear-cut villains on that side of the ball.

However, Towns and Brunson held their own against the Spurs’ explosive offensive attack on Sunday, helping the Knicks to a victory as a result.

The Knicks will next take the floor on Tuesday night against the Toronto Raptors on the road.
