What seasons for teams that started 5-0?
While the Bulls and Sixers may be waiting, Spurs joined Thunder in the franchise club, starting the 2025/26 season with five consecutive victories. surprisingly, this has never happened in san antonio and it’s not that common after all: only 82 teams have achieved such a feat before.
And that’s a pretty good number since 77 teams (or 94% of them) that started 5-0 ended up qualifying for the playoffs. Among them, 42 teams (51%) even reached the conference finals, and 32 (39%) made it to the finals, and 22 (27%) even managed to win the title at the end of the season!
For the Spurs, who have benefited from a fairly mild schedule (travels to the Mavericks and Pelicans, hosting the Nets, Raptors and Heat), it’s clearly too early to get excited.

Because we have to avoid entering the short list of teams that after a perfect start collapsed to the extent that they missed the playoffs. This has only happened five times in history. The last appearance dates back to the 1998/99 lockout season, albeit reduced to 50 games, when Sonics of Gary Payton started with five wins before finishing with a balanced record (25 wins – 25 losses).
The worst precedent remains that of Warriors of Tim Hardaway etc Latrell Sprewell 1994/95: After a roaring start (5-0), punctuated by a big win over the Lakers, the Bay franchise completely collapsed, leading to the season-long firing of Don Nelson and a final record of 26-56.
