When Jaylen Brown undergoes rehab with an Olympic swimming champion
It is not unusual to come across Jailen Brown at the pool during the off season. This is how the Celtics winger has been working for four years. But this summer he looked for and found a prestigious partner: Dara Torres. She shone at the 1984, 1992 and 2000 Olympic Games, winning 12 medals, including four gold, and setting several world records.
“I really thought it was going to sink”, she remembers during the first meeting with the Boston player (1m98 and 102 kilograms). “The more muscular we are, the more we go underwater.”
What exactly was the 2024 Finals MVP looking for in a partnership with a very high level swimmer? “Improve my technique in the water, my efficiency, without moving too much. It’s an analogy with life: we don’t waste time, we just want to get from point A to point B as easily as possible.”
Dara Torres highlighted the attitude of Jaylen Brown, whom she describes as a “perfectionist” who, despite rookie mistakes, is quick to correct herself. “He understands such things”she said, snapping her fingers. “I wish all athletes were like him…”
The influence of Michael Jordan
Especially since the first dive took place a month after the player’s surgery, to treat a partial rupture of the right meniscus. What Dana Torres didn’t know…
“That was news to me, it didn’t look like he had surgery”underlines the four-time Olympic champion. “I think swimming can really help with rehabilitation because it doesn’t damage the joints. It’s almost like you’re floating in the air, but there’s still resistance.”
And if Jaylen Brown dared, it was to imitate another Olympic legend, especially a basketball one.
“When I asked him how he got into swimming, he said Michael Jordan did it, although he didn’t really talk about it.”says Dana Torres. “When we’re on the floor, we don’t use all the muscles, while in the pool we do. It helps in different aspects if you play several sports”concludes the Celtics star.
