Where Tyronn Lue ‘went wrong’ with Chris Paul after training camp

In the weeks since Los Angeles Clippers made shocking the decision to part ways with Chris Paul during the season, more information came to light regarding behind-the-scenes incidents that soured the relationship, leading up to training camp where the head coach Tyronn Lue the first was allegedly wrong.

When the Clippers signed Chris Paul in the offseason, his role on the court was expected to be minimal, and Tyronn Lue was the allegedly authorized it after training camp, according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.

Paul was given a major role in the rotation by Lue, and he played well at first. The Clippers started the season with Kawhi Leonard injured and then ended up losing Bradley Beal to a season-ending injury. Pavle was needed in the rotation. During practice, Paul reportedly routinely led the second unit to victories over the starters in embarrassing fashion. It reportedly changed Paul’s expectations of the team.

In the end, the Clippers decided that Paul’s absence from the roster was more beneficial than keeping him. Although he was brought back into the rotation shortly before the decision was made to part ways, he had been benched for some time.

In total, Paul appeared in 16 games this season with just over 14 minutes per game. He averaged 2.9 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists while shooting 32.1 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from the 3-point line and 50 percent from the free throw line. With the exception of his 3-point percentage, all of those other numbers were career lows.

Right now, the Clippers continue to pick their options on that one Paul, who reportedly plans to end this season.
