Why a Trey Murphy III, Herb Jones trade is unlikely right now

With The New Orleans Pelicans are showing their losseswith the team sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference, it will automatically lead to speculation that they could be sellers by the trade deadline in February. Although maybe with The Pelicans are looking ahead to turn around and enter the 2026 NBA playoffstrade status of such players as Trey Murphy III and Herb Jones it was given more context.
ClutchPoints’ NBA insider Brett Siegel spoke with fellow outlet reporter Tomer Azarly on “Clutch Scoops,” where the topic of New Orleans, specifically Murphy and Jones, came up. While there is no doubt that there is interest in the league, the team was not “receptive”.
“They’ve heard these offers, they’ve heard what teams want in terms of Trey Murphy, Herb Jones, but there’s no movement on that front. The expectation around the league is that no players will be moved before the trade deadline,” Siegel said.
When it comes to the moves the Pelicans will make, it looks like they will be more “on the edge” with names like Jordan Poole and Jose Alvarado is mentioned.
“It looks like the Pelicans are going to make moves around the rim,” Siegel said. “Whether it’s Jordan Poole, Jose Alvarado is a name that keeps coming up. And there’s also talk around the Pelicans that they’re trying to get back into the first round. They want to try to get another first-round pick for 2026 after trading away.”
Either way, Siegel would say teams view Murphy and Jones as “uncertain dreams,” meaning they likely aren’t moved, but it remains to be seen with New Orleans at 8-26 heading into Wednesday night’s game against the Chicago Bulls.
