Why Grizzlies Jaren Jackson Jr. downplays Ja Morant’s imaginative drama

The The Memphis Grizzlies heard the noise. They know the narratives, the conjecture, and the imaginative drama that tends to spin whenever the seasons turn in unexpected directions. However, when asked about everything from rotations to chemistry to the latest social media theories I Morant and dressing room, Jaren Jackson Jr. barely blinked. Why? Because in the building, the locker room leader says none of that exists.

If there’s a window into the Grizzlies’ current chemistry, Jackson Jr. indicates a moment it had nothing to do with Morant or any outside story. Instead, it was veteran center Jock Landale, who voluntarily sat out the win over the New Orleans Pelicans so Jackson Jr. and Zach Eddy could close out the game together.

“The vibe is dope and that’s Jock in a nutshell,” Jackson Jr. explained. “(Landlay) is so unselfish and cares about the team. I want Jock out there, so he is what he is. Sometimes he might say he needs to go out, and I don’t agree with that. It’s just the atmosphere here. We want everybody to win.”

It’s a moment that rarely appears in the discourse of rumor mills. But for Jackson Jr. and the rest of the team, it reflects a truth that’s impossible to twist: internal support is realand it is consistent. As the Grizzlies battled injuries, inconsistency and the scrutiny that comes with being expected to contend, the talk outside turned to imagined tension. This includes speculation about the relationship between Jackson Jr., Morant and the rest of the locker room.

Jackson Jr. called it predictable but inaccurate as he sat next to Morant in the locker room. The former Defensive Player of the Year dismissed the speculation as manufactured drama from sources unrelated to actual team operations. He also suggested that people looking for controversy will find ways to create it, regardless of the reality inside the facility.

“Again, it’s crazy to have a bunch of voices and communication,” Jackson Jr. emphasized. “You need that on the road and it’s special coming from those guys (on the bench). I know they want to be there, but they’ve been doing it all season.”

“I think people like to watch what they want to watch when it comes to that kind of (team camaraderie),” Jackson Jr. added. “It’s always been consistent, so we never talk about it. There’s nothing to talk about.”

As Memphis looks for a top-six seed to avoid a playoff run, Jackson Jr. is keeping his focus simple and focused on the future. Avoiding the pitfalls of overanalyzing rumors, he boils down the path to success to one basic principle.

“We still have to be aggressive at all times, so that’s what I’m trying to do,” Jackson Jr. stated. “That’s about it.”

In an era where NBA stories often eclipse the games themselves, the Grizzlies’ approach is refreshingly old-school: let the wins do the talking. Downplaying the so-called Ja Morant play, Jackson Jr. and his teammates are betting that consistency and chemistry will silence the skeptics. If their recent form is any indication, they’re already proving it on the hardwood.
