Why is CM Punk, and not this former world champion, the “perfect” final opponent for John Cena

John Cena steadily moves towards his the last vve match ever.

With just two days left before Cena hangs up his boots, his previous rival CM Punk recently shared a bold opinion about Cena’s ultimate opponent. During his appearance on Up & Adams, Punk claimed as much he would be the “perfect” opponent for Cena to face in his final match. However, he also added a former world champion Gunthername as the appropriate choice.

“The perfect (option) would probably be me,” claimed Punk. “Right now, I don’t know if it’s perfect, but it looks like Gunter, because I’ve been in the ring with him and I know what he can do, and I don’t know who else in the tournament can beat him at this point.

Gunter recently defeated Carmelo Hayes to advance to the semifinals of the Last Time Is Now tournament. He also retired Goldberg earlier this year and is one of the best names to retire Cena.

After his loss to CM Punk in SummerSlam August 2025, “The General of the Ring” went on hiatus, but returned a few weeks ago on Monday evening RAV against Je’Von Evans.

Someone who has held it for a very, very long time,” he added. “Watching him exit with such style, grace and dignity was a real treat. We don’t often get to say goodbye in real time to our sporting heroes, but this is one time we can.”
