Why JJ McCarthy was fined $11,593 against the Packers

The The Minnesota Vikings are out Week 18 with a 16-3 win over the Green Bay Packers. However, it seems JJ McCarthy was fined for some of his antics during that competition.

Reports indicate the soon-to-be 23-year-old quarterback was fined $11,593or unsportsmanlike conductaccording to NFL Network’s Tom Pelliser. McCarthy taunted Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon after shouldering him on a play.

“NFL fines Vikings QB JJ McCarthy $11,593 for unsportsmanlike conduct – taunting Packers CB Keisean Nixon after he dropped his shoulder last week.”

This is the first punishment of McCarthy’s career, as he does not usually make fun of his opponents after games. But he appeared pumped up after two Packers defensive players were stiff-armed and trucked in a win in Week 18. So emotion may have gotten the better of the second-year quarterback.

McCarthy and the The Vikings will hope for better daysas the club failed to reach the postseason this year. After missing the entire 2024-25 season with a knee injury, the former first-round pick was able to make his career debut in 2025-26. Unfortunately, injuries have been the story for JJ McCarthy throughout his career so far, as he has only managed to play 10 games.

It’s been a bit of a rough season for the Vikings quarterback, as he’s struggled in the games he’s played. McCarthy finished the campaign with 1,632 passing yards and 15 total touchdowns (11 passing, four rushing), while also throwing 12 interceptions with a 57.6% completion percentage.

The Vikings will have some interesting decisions to make this offseason. Some believe the franchise should move on from JJ McCarthy. However, given that he’s a former first-round pick, it’s more likely that the team is giving him all the opportunities he needs to prove himself.
