Why Mavericks owner Kyrie Irving could be an obstacle to an Anthony Davis trade

They have been rumored recently swirling around the Dallas Mavericks and whether they may be looking for a trade All-Star Anthony Davis. Cooper Flagg has emerged as a clear building block for the team moving forward, and continued injury frustrations with Davis could motivate Dallas to try to trade the key piece they acquired in the infamous Luka Doncic trade last season.

The Mavericks have struggled this year, and absences are a big part of the reason Kyrie Irvingwho has yet to return to the lineup from last year’s torn anterior cruciate ligament injury. Recently, NBA insider Marc Stein described how Irving’s presence is can motivate the team owner Patrick Dumont is holding off on the Davis trade for now.

“The Mavericks have yet to see Flagg, Davis and Irving play together for a second, and I’m told that new Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont is certainly among those in the organization who would prefer to see what that trio looks like before doing anything else drastic,” Stein reported on his Substack.

“Waiting for the off-season and the increased opportunities that summer usually provides may appear to be the preferred course,” he added.

It would certainly be interesting to see how the Mavericks would look with Irving, Davis and Flagg in uniform, but at this point it doesn’t seem likely that Irving alone would be enough for Dallas to gain true Western contender status.

That’s also before considering that future injuries would seem likely for Davis, and possibly Irving, given that he’s a soon-to-be-34 undersized guard coming off a devastating injury.

Either way, the Mavericks will take the floor next on Monday night for a road game against the Portland Trail Blazers. Davis is currently listed as questionable for that contest.
