Why OKC’s Dominance Stephen A. Smith ‘worried about the NBA’

Wednesday night, The Oklahoma City Thunder have improved at 24-1 in the 2025-26 NBA season with a dominant 49-point home run win over the Phoenix Suns in the knockout round of the NBA Cup. With the win, the Thunder advanced to Las Vegas, where they will play against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday.
The Thunder have reached another level of dominance this season after their championship run a year ago, and more recently ESPN sports media personalities Stephen A. Smith took to the air with the reason why their elite play worries him for the league as a whole.
“OKC is on the verge of making this season very, very boring. They’re just that dominant,” Smith said on First Take, per Legion Hoops on X, formerly Twitter. “I’m sitting there like, ‘it doesn’t matter who they go against…’ It’s so dominant in OKC, even if you had the opportunity, with all the assets you have, to get Giannis Antetokounmpo, why bother? You don’t need him. That’s how great they are… I just don’t know what to say.”

Indeed, the Thunder have reached a level of superiority over the league that many pundits didn’t think was possible given the supposed era of parity the NBA is currently living in.
However, the team’s cornucopia of two-way players, as well as their top star talent in Shaa Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams, allowed them to rise above the competition and convince everyone that their championship from a year ago was just the beginning of their streak.
Either way, the Thunder will next take the floor Saturday night from Las Vegas against the Spurs. The winner of that game will advance to the NBA Cup Finals, where they will meet either the Orlando Magic or the New York Knicks.
