Why owner still supports Nick Harrison amid fan fury

The The Dallas Mavericks have had plenty of reasons for optimism since the departure Luke Dončić in February. Despite the arrival of Cooper Flagg and a roster that looks loaded with talent, injury woes have resulted in another mixed start for the Mavericks, who are currently 1-2 to start the season.

In such a scenario, while the fans kept asking the front office to fire the general manager Nico Harrisonhe still enjoys the support of owner Patrick Dumont. That, according to Mark Stein of Stein Line, is because Dumont was the one who approved first of all, Dončić’s store.

“One source told Stein Line that Dumont’s support for his GM stemmed largely from the fact that he was the one who ultimately signed off on Harrison’s little-known plan to trade Doncic — then 25 and a five-straight All-NBA first-team selection — for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and an unprotected 2-2 first-round pick,” he wrote.

Dallas fans chanted “Shoot Nobody” during a 33-point loss to the San Antonio Spurs and again two nights later in a 10-point loss at home to the Washington Wizards. The Spurs game doubled as Cooper Flagg’s NBA debut and featured an unusually loud “Go Spurs Go” at the American Airlines Center, which Victor Wembanyama said stunned him after the game.

Further, Niko Harrison told local reporters in April that he has three seasons left on his contract going into 2025-26, following an extension in June 2024. This comes alongside a troubled start, which has seen the Mavericks struggle to score consistently, something Doncic’s presence would help.

Furthermore, Kyrie Irving’s absence has also exacerbated the problems, as the team currently lacks a reliable point guard who can look up to his teammates. The Mavericks will now look to build on their win over the Toronto Raptors when they host the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder on October 27th.
