Why the Lakers, Rockets are not likely landing spots for Chris Paul

The NBA world is still waiting to see where the former Los Angeles Clippers are guarding Chris Paul will sign by the end of the year, with Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets some named him as a potential suitor for a future Hall of Famer. Pavle was unceremoniously released by the Clippers during a road trip earlier this month, shortly after announcing that the 2025-26 season would be his last in the NBA.

Recently, NBA insider Jake Fisher came to Marc Stein’s Substack to convey why The Lakers are not a likely destination for Paul’s final NBA chapter.

“Despite the 40-year-old’s oft-cited desire to play as close to his Los Angeles family as possible, sources say the Lakers are not considering Paul as a potential offseason addition,” Fisher said. “…The Lakers have generally been very intentional about targeting players under the age of 30 since the offseason when they were addressing various roster needs…”

Fisher also dismissed speculation that Paul and his former team, the Rockets, could reunite.

“…sources say the Rockets are not currently considering changes to their team and don’t expect to do so until late January due to the very limited breathing room they have,” Fitzgerald said.

The Rockets have seemed to need a real point guard at times this year thanks to Fred VanVleet’s ACL injury just before the season started, but at this point, the team seems content to continue to let Reid Shepard continue to work things out on the fly.

All in all, NBA fans will certainly want to see Paul sign with someone at some point this season to properly bid farewell to the NBA world, but at this point there is no indication as to who that organization might be.
