Why Tuomas Iisalo is easing into the Jaren Jackson Jr., Zach Edey ‘ecosystem’

For Memphis Grizzliesprocess integrating two-time All-Star Jaren Jackson Jr. with a sophomore center Zach Edei is not seen as a puzzle but as a necessary investment. Despite the offensive growing pains as they learn to play together, the team’s leadership expresses a clear, long-term confidence in the pair’s underlying potential. However, the adjustment for Jackson Jr., the 2023 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, has been significant.

Playing alongside a true, dominant, low-post center in Edeo changed Jackson Jr.’s offensive responsibilities and spacing for the first time. Iisalo doesn’t seem worried about the Grizzlies’ long-term fit get land in the Western Conference.

“Jaren is improving as a player every year,” Iisalo told ClutchPoints. “He’s a dynamic threat, whether it’s inside against smaller guys or outside against bigger guys.”

Eddie, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 draft, known for his 7-foot-4 frame and interior presence. The change required Jackson Jr. to evolve within a revamped offensive scheme.

“(Jackson Jr.) had to adjust to a different type of offensive ecosystem and different players around him in general,” Iisalo emphasized. “He did a great job with it even though he had an injury in the summer.

Despite the obstacles, the Grizzlies appreciate the defensive tandem formed by Jackson Jr. and Eddy, which has strengthened the team’s rim protection and contributed to strong metrics when they share the floor.

“Defensively, Jaren offers, paired with (Zach Edei), one of the best edge-protecting front lines in the entire league,” Iisalo added. “These numbers were also great with them together. The road gives us a ton.”

It’s easy to see why mixing Jackson Jr.’s skills. based on the perimeter with Edei dominating the paint is a calculated, season-long project that the Grizzlies are committed to realizing. Allowing Jackson Jr. time to recalibrate his timing and positioning in the new offensive structure will ultimately unlock a more powerful and versatile title contender. Never mind the other nonsense, according to the All-Star.

“I think people like to watch what they want to watch when it comes to that kind of (team camaraderie),” Jackson Jr. added. “It’s always been consistent, so we never talk about it. There’s nothing to talk about. We still have to be aggressive at all times, so that’s what I try to do. That’s about it.”

So with all of that figured out, it’s easy to see why the Grizzlies are doing well in the West now that Tripp and ZamBo are growing together.
