The Dallas Mavericks face a significant setback after confirming that the center Derek Lively II will miss the rest of the season. The 21-year-old will undergo season-ending surgery on his right foot, creating an unexpected challenge for a team trying to stabilize after a rocky start.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the news on Wednesday, noting that Lively played just seven games this season before lingering discomfort led to the decision to have surgery.
“Dallas Mavericks center Derek Lively II will undergo season-ending surgery on his right foot to address lingering discomfort, sources tell me and Tim McMahon. Lively, who has played 7 games this season, is expected to make a full recovery.”
With Lively sidelined, questions quickly turned to how Dallas could bolster its roster. ESPN front office insider Bobby Marks more details on the team’s potential options according to league rules.

If approved, Dallas could sign/trade the player with 1 year left on his contract.

The Mavericks are now eligible to seek roster help following Derek Lively II’s injury
Securing the exception would allow Dallas to add short-term depth, though that depends on league approval and available roster space.
Mavericks interim general manager Matt Riccardi said the organization remains committed to supporting Lively during the recovery process.
“Derek has handled every challenge this season with professionalism and resilience,” Ricciardi said. “Although this is a setback, we are confident in his long-term future and will fully support him throughout his recovery.”
Lively is expected to be ready for training camp next season. His shortened 2025-26 campaign. finishing with averages of 4.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.6 blocks per game on 61.1% shooting in 16.4 minutes in seven appearances.
Dallas enters Friday’s matchup against the Brooklyn Nets with a 9-16 record and 11th in the Western Conference after a A 122-109 win over the Houston Rockets. After the Nets game, the Mavericks will travel to Salt Lake City for a meeting with the Utah Jazz on Monday as they evaluate options to bolster the roster in Lively’s absence.
