Will Smith drops hilarious confession about 18-inning Game 3 against Blue Jays

When it comes to Los Angeles Dodgers‘ World Series win over the Toronto Blue Jays, shortstop deserve credit as does catcher Will Smith.

From his steadfast decision to call the Dodgers’ ace pitchers to his start in Game 7, no feat has been as impressive as Smith’s Performances from 18 innings in Game 3 at Dodger Stadiumwhere he kept things behind the plate for nearly seven hours.

Talking about what it was like to play more innings than any other catcher in MLB history during the World Series on a hot stove, Smith broke down his experience and why he had to sit out all of November to recover from another long playoff campaign.

“No, yeah, we’ve got good athletic trainers, good strength coaches. Yeah, like you said, the World Series kind of destroyed me, you know, especially that 18-inning game,” Smith said. “But yeah, no, you take it, I just take a break in November. Basically, I don’t do anything in November, and then December comes, I start working out in January, you know, we’re back at it. So it’s just a routine now. It’s worked. And yeah, I don’t know. You just kind of keep at it.”

Asked specifically how a player could survive an 18-inning game spent mostly crouched behind home base, Smith noted that he was in survival mode and had to take an IV to recover after securing the win.

“No, it was, I wasn’t really thinking after that game, honestly. I got an IV, just surviving, just in survival mode, you know, come back the next day, try to win,” Smith noted. “I think we dropped the next two games. Unfortunately, it would have been nice to win those two, but I had to go back to Toronto. But yeah, I’m glad we won in the end. So it was worth it.”

Given that Smith effectively called two baseball games in a row, albeit one that was very boring until the offense found a second wind deep into the night, it makes sense that he was in “survival mode” after the win. While he’d certainly like to return to the Fall Classic this October in pursuit of the elusive three-peat, for Smith’s sake, let’s hope the Dodgers can do things within the rules instead of forcing their catcher deep into synch extras.
