With a great Reid Shepard, the Rockets knocked off the Warriors
Even without Kevin DurantThe Rockets came to impose themselves on the floor of the Warriors with a Reed Sheppard bubbly: 31 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 blocks. Golden State was up to 14 points ahead before shooting after returning from the locker room.
The Warriors started the match in the best possible way with 5 of 5 shooting after four minutes of play and led 14-6. Stephen Curry runs the shop and Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green are wild. On the Rockets side, Reed Shepard is floating with three award-winning baskets, and his energy is contagious (20-14). Alperen Sengun is left alone against Draymond Green and drives him around a few times. After 12 minutes, the Warriors still lead, 25-22.
Jimmy Butler opens hostilities in the second quarter with And-1, and Brandin Podziemski supports him with 3 points (31-24). Stephen Curry, until then discreet, warms up his wrist with a basket from 10 meters, and the Warriors overcome their theme (38-32). In Houston, Amen Thompson showed his touch and “hang time” with a great backboard basket.
He is the one again who goes the alley-oop to cut the gap to a small point (43-42). But behind, receives a Flagrant 1 foul on Will Richard. Novak takes his shots and then hits threes. Curry imitates him and in one minute the Warriors make a break (55-44) to finally reach the break with a 12-point lead (59-47).
Will Richard runs the house
After the break, it is still the same Richard who makes the difference against the Rockets who are looking for a second wind (63-49). Alperen Sengun restarts the machine with a “move” like Jokic or Nowitzki: a single leg pull. Curry cleared, Quinten Post maintains the lead (72-62), but the Warriors are in danger as Reed Shepard wakes up. The “second-year” of the Rockets connects a mid-range shot, an interception by Curry, and then a three-pointer to bring the Rockets back into the match (72-67).
At the beginning of the 3rd quarter, there was only one possession left (76-74), and the Rockets started it with a 9-0 run to cool down the room! There is a big difference in tempo between the two formations, but also in the variety of attacks. In Houston, Sengun can hit near the circle while Jae’Sean Tate punishes in the corner.
But the Warriors are not giving up. Jimmy Butler who restarts the machine and it inspires Brandin Podziemski and Will Richard. To the point that Golden State was back in front (89-88).
Except Reed Shepard is unsustainable. He hits another shot from 4-5 meters, sending Amen Thompson into the alley oop (97-91). Jimmy Butler keeps hope, imitated by Moses Moody with 3 points (102-100). But Reid Shepard didn’t flinch on the free throws, and the Rockets won 104-100.
WHAT TO REMEMBER
– Sprain for Gary Payton II. As the years go by, so does Gary Payton II, who was forced into the locker room early by a sprained ankle in the first quarter. His defense would be invaluable in slowing down Reed Shepard…
– Stephen Curry injured. It’s hard to know when Stephen Curry was injured, but we saw him complaining about his right thigh during a timeout at the very end of the game. He clearly wasn’t himself in this game, going 4 of 13 on shots and 7 turnovers. The Warriors announced that they will have an MRI.
Reid Shepard confirms. Already the author of 27 points against the Nuggets, the Rockets guard set a personal best against the Warriors with 31 points on 12 of 25 shooting, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 blocks! His specialty is the “pull-up jumper” from 4-5 meters and several times he created distance for a shot to the free throw line with his defender. Hyperactive, cuts, blocks, fights for rebounds… Reference match.
