Without an extension, Jalen Duren and Jaden Ivey have a season to convince

Jalen Duren and Jaden IveyThe Pistons had to extend the deadline until Monday Jalen Duren etc Poor Iveybut the negotiations were unsuccessful. Thus, these two players will finish the 2025/26 season as protected “free agents”. Detroit will therefore have the opportunity to match any offers its young duo will receive and the Michigan franchise holds “Real Bird” on both players, which could make it easier to negotiate a new contract.

“The hardest part of this job is the basketball job” admits Pistons coach JB Bickerstaff. “It generates a lot of emotions and complicates certain relationships. The players have their representatives who act as mediators, but the business of basketball is still very complicated.”

Jalen Duren is coming off two straight double-double seasons, but needs to step up defensively, where he has particularly struggled in the playoffs when he has to defend Karl-Anthony Towns away from the racket.

A motivating… or disturbing element

For his part, Jaden Ivey was coming off a career-best season last year, averaging 17.6 points on 46% shooting and 41 from distance, but that surge was halted by a fractured fibula in January.

While expected during the first match of the season against the Bulls, the last had to undergo knee arthroscopy and will miss the next four weeks of competition. The former Purdue player will first have to show that he can return to 100 percent and play a series of matches, but also confirm the progress seen last season.

“Some guys use that as motivation and have great years and some guys fail and have rough times” explains JB Bickerstaff about players not being extended beyond their rookie contract. “But it’s not just young players, I’ve seen more experienced players struggle at the trade deadline or contract extensions, everything that entails.”
