Would a Stephen Curry trade for the Spurs to pair with Victor Vembanjama make sense?

The Spurs San Antonio Spurs Victor Wembanyama and Chris Paul is temporary with the latter is nearing the end of his NBA career. However, there is another veteran veteran they can look to to raise their ceiling: Stephen Curry.

Yahoo Sports posted a video on YouTube featuring podcast host Kevin O’Connor and special guest Tom Haberstroh. They discussed the advantages Spurs can take with Wembanjama’s rookie deal, with Haberstroh share their arguments for why the team should be involved for the ten-time NBA All-Star.

“The rookie contract is why you sign Stephen Curry. The rookie scale hack is something no one talks about, but they absolutely should. The fact that Victor Wembanyama will be paid less than average as an exception for the next 2.5 years is why you made a deal for Steph Curry. Because his deal is exactly tied to Victor Wembanyama’s rookie contract,” Haberstroh said at 0:30.

“Yeah, who’s going to take over Stephen Curry’s $62 million contract going into ’26-’27.” So when Victor Wembanyama makes $16 million that year, you can bet I have those two guys for $80 million over the next 2 years. I’m going to get the best shooter ever paired with what might be the best defender ever.”

The arrival of Stephen Curry from the Warriors will be a difficult task for Victor Vembanyama and the Spurs.

However, that’s what the team can accomplish with the room it has in its salary cap. Considering Vembanjama’s rookie contract, which has paid him just over $30 million over the past two years through the end of the 2027-28 season, gives San Antonio plenty of room to make a move provided they give up a few players and first-round picks to appease Golden State.

Vembanyama has benefited from the veteran guidance of Chris Paul as he has developed his effectiveness on both sides of the ball. This season, he is averaging 24.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, four blocks and 3.8 assists while shooting 47.7% from the field and 35.4% from the field.

When Paul decides it’s time to retire, the Spurs can try to bring Curry to the Lone Star State. This would not only give Vembanyama a chance to elevate his game alongside one of the greatest shooters in NBA history, but potentially elevate his team to title-contending status.
