Yoshinobu Yamamoto is making a fan’s day at VBC

The beginning of the pool game in the 2026 edition World Baseball Classic is almost upon us, and the teams have already gathered in preparation for the tournament. Team Japan welcomes two Los Angeles Dodgers superstars in Shohei Ohtana and Yoshinobu Yamamotowith the two set to lead Japan’s charge in defense of their WBC crown.

Japan is part of Group C, and will compete against Australia, South Korea, the Czech Republic and Chinese Taipei in the group stage. They are favorites to top the group, especially with home advantage as Pool C play begins at the Tokyo Dome in six days’ time.

Team Japan welcomed fans from their hometown. The players could do nothing but return the favor. Dodgers star pitcher Yamamoto came out and graced a fan by throwing a ball into the stands, which was caught by an adult and immediately given to a child, who he could not believe his fate.

With all the competition the WBC produces, it’s easy to forget that at the heart of every baseball player is a kid who just wants to have fun on the field. And who knows, maybe the indelible mark the Dodgers star left on the kid would inspire him to follow in his footsteps as he forges his own path forward.

Yamamoto showed what a great starter he is by being the rare kind of workhorse who could pitch high-leverage innings without needing much rest. It is not entirely clear how sustainable this is from a long-term perspective. But him being the Game 7 hero for the Dodgers is just incredible when he didn’t have a full day off.

now, Yamamoto wants to add even more silverware to his cabinet, as Team Japan wants to reject all competitors in the 2026 WBC.
