Zaon Williamson’s new life in the starting lineup creates optimistic prospects

The The New Orleans Pelicans may be down against the New York Knicks. however, The return of Zion Williamson the starting lineup offered a glimmer of hope for a franchise desperate for consistency and direction. After a break from the bench, Williamson regained his place in the starting five, playing extended minutes without restriction. While the defeat hurt, the striker’s performance and behavior afterwards suggested the player was finding his rhythm and the team was beginning to rediscover its identity.

Tangible progress, measured optimism and a sense that the long-awaited recalibration could finally take hold. Even in a 130-125 home loss to the Knicks, Williamson sounded more encouraged rather than frustrated, emphasizing continuity, communication and incremental gains that point to a more stable future. The oft-injured 25-year-old finished the night with 32 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.

Although the result went in the wrong direction, the direction was right.

“It was good. Like I said, me and (James Borrego) had communication the whole way,” Williamson began. “We knew I was going to be back (in the starting lineup) at some point. It was just a matter of when my minutes would increase so we could get the most out of them.”

That patient approach seems to be paying dividends. Perhaps most encouraging for the Pelicans is Williamson’s reported physical condition.

“I felt pretty good at the end of the game,” Williamson said. “My body is fine. It’s not the result we wanted, but we definitely did things better compared to the last game.”

For an organization that has been chasing consistency for years, “better” is important. Against the Knicks, Williamson saw an intentional shift. The ball movement that has plagued the Pelicans in recent games was showing signs of life, with players adding touches and trusting each other.

“That’s pretty much what I was talking about at the end of the last game,” Williamson noted. “You know we were stagnant. (against the Knicks), we had more natural ball movement. We trusted each other to pass.”

The Pelicans found themselves in a position to tie or win late, only to end up with a quality look that just didn’t fall. While frustrating, being competitive in clutch situations is an improvement for a team that has struggled to find its footing this season.

“There was a game where we collapsed a little bit defensively, but other than that, I think we were right,” Williamson explained. “All you can ask for is to be there within a shot or draw. We looked, it just didn’t fall.”

Obviously, not everything was rosy in the loss to the Knicks.

“We rebounded pretty well,” Williamson replied. “It’s just, on our defensive end, we’re still kind of giving up a lot of points.”

That defensive vulnerability is a persistent issue. Still, with Williamson healthy, starting and optimistic about the team’s direction The Pelicans finally have something upgrade.
