Željko Obradović threw in the towel for Belgrade Partizan!

Željko ObradovićA new earthquake on the benches of the Euroleague! Two days later removalEttore Messina in Milan it is Željko Obradović (age 65) who resigned from Belgrade Partizan. The technician with nine European titles thus decided to throw in the towel, a day after the slap on the floor of his former club, Panathinaikos (91-69), with the terrible 25-0 received between the third and fourth quarter.

This failure, the seventh in eight matches, pushed Partizan into the depths of the standings (18th out of 20) and pushed the most successful coach on the Old Continent to take responsibility for this unsuccessful start to the season.

After the defeat against Panathinaikos, he came out in front of the journalists completely disappointed, explaining that he “I didn’t know” how to revive your team. Apparently, the man many consider the greatest European coach of his generation felt he was no longer the man for the job.

“Unfortunately, the time has come when I have to take responsibility for all the negative events that have happened this season and submit my irrevocable resignation.” he wrote to supporters.

Andrea Trinchieri is back?

“Zoc” started his career on the bench with a surprising European title with Partizan in 1992, before placing in the Euroleague with Badalona, Real Madrid, Panathinaikos and Fenerbahce. His record speaks for itself: nine Euroleagues won with five different clubs, two Saporta Cups, a harvest of national titles (first of all, eleven championships in Greece and four in Turkey) and more than forty won club trophies.

He also made history as a coach: at the head of Yugoslavia, he won Olympic silver in Atlanta in 1996, gold at Euro 1997, gold at the World Championship in 1998 and bronze at Euro 1999, completing an almost unique international biography. Returning as a coach to Belgrade in 2021, he managed to put the Serbian club back on the Euroleague map, but failed to return to the Final Four.

Željko Obradović becomes in any case the fourth coach who left his post this season in the Euroleague, after Ioannis Sfairopoulos in Red Star Belgrade, Go to Penarroia in Barca and Ettore Messina in Milan.

According to the Serbian press, it is Andrea Trinchieriwho already managed Partizan between 2018 and 2020, who is best placed to take over.
