Zion Williamson plays down the severity of his foot injury

On Monday night, New Orleans Pelicans fell to 0-3 with a home loss on hands of the Boston Celtics. You could almost hear a collective groan from the Pelicans fanbase when that star was announced Zion Williamson would miss out this game because of a foot injury.

Injuries have of course been the story of Williamson’s career, and recently, the star has diminished how bad the injury he’s dealing with right now really is.

“Zion Williamson said he initially hurt his foot after a dunk against San Antonio last Friday, but doesn’t think it should be much of a concern,” The Athletic’s Will Guillory reported on X, formerly Twitter.

“We’re dealing with it day-to-day right now. Nothing major. Nothing that’s going to keep me out for a long time,” Williamson said.

Pelicans fans certainly hope Williamson is telling the truth, as they have lost numerous seasons to Williamson’s injuries over the years.

Tough start for the Pelicans

The New Orleans Pelicans were among the worst teams in the NBA a year ago, thanks in large part to injuries, and were hoping this year would provide an opportunity for a fresh start, with Jordan Poole now in the lineup after being traded for CJ McCollum and Williamson back and seemingly healthy.

However, the Pelicans have stumbled out of the gate so far, currently sitting at 0-3 with losses to the Memphis Grizzlies, San Antonio Spurs, and now the previously winless Celtics.

New Orleans is still waiting for point guard Dejounte Murray to return from the torn Achilles he suffered last year, his first with the team, and will also now wait to see how long Williamson will be sidelined with his latest injury.

With the Pelicans possibly having to give up their first-round pick next summer, things could certainly turn out better to start the season.

The Pelicans will next take the floor on Wednesday night against the Denver Nuggets at 9:00 PM ET on the road.
