Godwin, Irving’s absences from practice raise questions

Injuries are biting now, but Tampa Bay still looks like a contender. Back on September 16, c The Buccaneers were dealing with a long-term injury list and still opened 2-0 with wins over the Falcons and Texans.

The case then, and now, is depth plus star power when healthy: the receiver room that can emerge Chris GodwinMike Evans, Jalen McMillan, and standout rookie Emeka Egbuka, a line led by Tristan Wirfs and Luke Goedeke at running back, and a defense led by Antoine Winfield Jr., Vita Vea, Haason Reddick and veteran leader Lavonte David. If the list is fixed, the ceiling remains real.

The new suspense of Week 10 arrived in the middle of the week. Buccaneers RB Bucky Irving and VR Chris Godwin they were not observed at the exercisesraising questions about their availability for Sunday’s game against the Patriots, according to Adam Schefter.

That puts a spotlight on contingency plans in both the backfield and passing game and asks Baker Mayfield to once again direct through attrition.

The context hasn’t changed much since September: Tampa Bay’s health changed the weekly script. Godwin is recovering from a nagging leg injury, and Irving’s emergence has helped balance the offense when available.

If either of them sit, more of the strain shifts to the perimeter three that includes Evans and Egbuka, with secondary targets asked to win the spread while the line protects Mayfield long enough to avoid drive-killing negative plays. Defensively, the Bucs still have difference makers who can shorten fields, but the margin is slimmer if the offense loses two chain movers.

The wider arc of injuries is also important here. At the end of last month, the head coach Todd Bowles told reporters that Irving (foot/shoulder) and Godwin (fibula) would be out of the Saints game, with a bye immediately after, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

That update framed a short-term window for rest and reset. If this week’s absences are precautionary, Tampa Bay could be able to secure long-term availability; if not, the depth chart will have to carry another week.

Either way, the week against New England doubles as a health checkpoint and measuring stick. If Tampa Bay can keep the operation stable without two key skill players, it reinforces the point from early season: When they get the bodies back, they look like a January problem.
