Brooklyn’s ‘Steal of the Draft’ could be in line for an NBA audition after dominating the G League

Ten games in Brooklyn Nets‘ season, Danny Wolf is the only one of the team’s five starters who has yet played extended NBA minutes. That could change in the coming days.

After losing Cam Thomas to a hamstring injury, the Nets were dealt another injury blow during Sunday’s loss to the New York Knicks. Backup center Dai’Ron Sharpe left the game with a strained left hamstring and was turned off. Although the severity of the injury is unknown, he is questionable for Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Raptors at Barclays Center.

If Sharp misses time, Wolff will be in line for the first significant minutes of his career.

Wolff was sidelined for a while after injuring his ankle during the opening day shootaround in Brooklyn. However, he has remained out of the rotation since his return. The 27th pick made his NBA debut in a loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Nov. 3, playing three minutes.

The Nets dealt Wolf and fellow rookies Ben Saraf and Nolan Traore to their G League affiliate on Wednesday. Wolff posted back-to-back double-doubles during his first two appearances in the G League. He scored 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting with 13 rebounds, two assists and three turnovers in Sunday’s 112-105 loss to the Capital City Go-Gos.

While the last of the Nets’ record five picks in the NBA’s first round, Wolf generated a fair amount of buzz before and after the draft. The Athletics’ Sam Vecenie had the former Michigan star No. 14 on his big board, 13 spots ahead of where Brooklyn landed him. meanwhile, one NBA GM voted Wolfe the biggest steal of the draft in the annual GM survey.

Wolff has looked promising during his post-draft play. In addition to his recent performance in the G League, the 21-year-old has been impressive during his preseason minutes. He averaged 10.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and 3-of-3 from three in 13.0 minutes per game during a pair of games with the Phoenix Suns in Macau.
