Steve Kerr pays tribute to John Beam before the Spurs game



When it comes to Steve Kerrhis life it is not in the box in training Golden State Warriors. Over the past few years, he has used his platform to shed light on various social and political causes. The the most significant of which is gun violence.

On Friday, Kerr maintained its consistency about bringing attention to the cause by honoring football player John Beam, according to ESPN’s Anthony Slater. Yesterday, Beam, a former Laney College coach and starLast chance Uon netflix, was shot and killed at the Laney campus in Oakland, California.

Before the pregame press conference, Kerr wore a shirt with John on it Beam’s name. Additionally, Kerr recognized the impact Beam had on the Oakland community and called for action to combat gun violence.

“Eeveryone knows he is a respected figure in Oakland, who has done so much for so many people,Kerr said.On behalf of the Warriors, I want to express our condolences and remind everyone that we have to be the change, as a community, as citizens, we have to be the ones who insist that we address the issues of gun violence.”

Steve Kerr’s activism against gun violence is deeply personal.

Kerr was touched by guns while in college. In 1984, his father, Malcolm Kerr, was assassinated in Beirut when Steve was 18 years old. His father was the president of the American University of Beirut.

At the time, Steve was a student at the University of Arizona. In 1999, his former coach, Ricky Birdsong, was shot and killed by a white man in Evanston, Illinois.
