Steph Curry calls herself ‘agent without sneakers’

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry raised eyebrows when he appeared in the San Antonio Spurs game in Nike Kobe 6s during warmups. It came just a day after ending his 13-year partnership with Under Armourwhich raised questions about his next move.

In the postgame press conference, Curry addressed the room when asked about potty training Nike shoes before the game.

“I’m a free agent, I’m here with new beginnings. I’ve been blessed to have the incredible experience of taking a chance on something that’s meant so much to me over the last 13 years,” Curry said, via ESPN’s Anthony Slater.

The Warriors star didn’t hold back when discussing what the Under Armor partnership meant to him. He pointed out how they made something from scratch in basketball.

“I’m extremely proud of myself, my team, everyone who’s been able to touch that job for so long. We should all be proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish by taking a basketball brand or brand and category that wasn’t something we’ve worked in before. But I’m excited about the future,” he added.

The sneaker moment came early Curry beat the Spurs by 49 pointshis second straight 40-point game against San Antonio. His explosive performance helped him join Michael Jordan and LeBron James as the only players over the age of 37 to record back-to-back 40-point games.

When asked why the partnership has ended now, Curry made it clear. He pointed to the challenging nature of the sneaker business and how things naturally evolve.

“Just in the best interest of both parties. The sneaker industry is tough, and like I said, things change over time and to the extent that you do your best to create something sustainable,” he explained.

Curry admitted there was some disappointment with how things ended, especially given the progress Curry Brand has made over the past five years. But he remains focused on the bigger picture and what comes next.

The four-time NBA champion now independently owns Curry Brand and can explore new product partnerships while maintaining the social impact that has defined the brand.
