Michael Porter Jr. reveals that Brooklyn told him to ‘stay away’ from certain podcast topics

Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. has caused controversy this offseason with a few comments he made during a podcast appearance. During recent appearance on Lonzo Ball’s podcast, “Ball in the family,” Porter Jr. revealed, the Nets urged him to keep his more controversial opinions to himself.

“Mostly I try to relax. Especially during the season, I don’t want to be on the Internet for anything other than basketball. I feel like it’s a summer thing,” Porter Jr. said. “Even with the (Nets) organization, we’ve just had conversations that they would appreciate it if I stayed away from certain topics, you know what I mean? That’s why the WNBA thing, it’s just such a sensitive topic in this day and age. That’s why I try to be aware of that.”

Nets general manager Sean Marks said in September that the organization spoke with Porter Jr. following his offseason media tour.

“Those conversations that me and the group had with Michael will remain internal,” Marks said. “I think this, as Jordi (Fernandez) alluded to, is a new environment for him, a new market, new expectations, new roles, both on the field and in the locker room for him. So, I think he’s finding his way. I think we’ll basically leave it at that. He knows where the organization stands on certain issues and the subject matter is a little different than where he was a little different than what he was.”

Porter Jr. has consistently made headlines for his remarks about the WNBA. During a performance with popular streamer Plaqueboimak, he insinuated that A McDonald’s All-American high school team would destroy a WNBA All-Star team or a women’s Olympic team. He also commented on the WNBA players’ push for a pay raise, comparing their popularity to that of ping pong players.

Those comments weren’t the only ones that sparked outrage. Porter Jr. also said it would hurt him to have a “straight daughter” or a “gay son” and test his dates by bringing up Andrew Tate content.

During his appearance on Ball’s show, Porter Jr. revealed that he is now hesitant to appear on podcasts or streams that aren’t his own. Although the Nets forward has controversial opinions, he said he feels the hosts of other shows intentionally ask him about those topics to increase engagement.

“A few things went viral, and then from there people are like, Oh, he’s going to say whatever,” Porter Jr. said. “Then from there, when I come to the interview, they purposely try to ask certain things because they know I’m going to say what I really think. I wanted to stop going on other people’s podcasts. I just wanted to do my own thing.”

“I don’t know if I feel like I’m misunderstood, because I mean, you can take everything I say to you and it is what it is. That’s what I think. And I feel like a lot of people probably agree with me, but there’s a lot of people who disagree, and they’re the loud ones. But there’s a lot of people who agree with the things that I say, because some things can’t just agree with those things” backlash.

Porter Jr. has scaled back his own podcast and his guest spots on others during the season. His only appearances were on Carmelo Anthony’s show, “7 PM in Brooklyn” and Ball’s podcast.

The 26-year-old is off to the best start of his career his trade to the Netsaveraging 24.2 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists on 47/36/86 shooting.
