Seth Curry ready to help ‘immediately’ amid brother Steph’s injury

SAN FRANCISCO – Doc Stephen Curry continues to recover from a right quad contusion he endured in Golden State Warriors‘ loss to the Houston Rockets, the Dubs will still have an active Curry for the rematch against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

After finally signing Seth Curry until the end of the season, Stephen’s shooting brother will be available to play against the Thunder, according to head coach Steve Kerr. Curry was an active participant in Golden State’s practice, and after being available to the media, he expressed his desire to help the Warriors as soon as possible.

“It feels good,” Curry said when asked how it felt to be officially signed to a contract with the Dubs. “It’s been a weird little break for me. First time in a long time watching NBA basketball and not being a part of it. It’s nice to get back in the gym, be with the guys and get the blood going again at practice.”

Golden State gave up on signing Curry early due to financial constraints related to the second apron. With the Dubs’ hard cap on another platform, they were initially only able to keep 14 players on the roster for the season. This forced them to wait until late November to create enough breathing room for his contract to grow proportionately to the point where the salary would adhere to the second cap.

The Dubs could have signed him as early as Nov. 10, but decided against it to save more cap space under the second apron, as well as to save themselves even more luxury tax penalties. Curry’s signing leaves Golden State roughly $265,000 under the second apron.

How prepared Curry was while he waited

But while Golden State’s financial constraints kept Curry sidelined for the first quarter of the season, the shooter was physically ready for whom he received an invitation.

“I just tried to stay in the best rhythm possible as far as going into the gym every day,” Curry summarized to reporters. “I’m getting my workouts in, staying sharp, trying to play live, with coaches or other players whenever I (could). It was tough mentally, but it kind of flew by.”

The mental aspect of waiting for a team to commit is a challenge, even if that team employs your brother, who also happens to be the franchise’s greatest player ever. When asked about the continued mental challenges of waiting for a contract, Curry expanded on what he did to stay positive.

“I knew it would come eventually,” Curry said.

“So I was just looking forward and trying to stay positive. My agent always told me, when you’re in or around the league, those 20 games go by so fast, this won’t be any different. So my agent was helping me keep my mind straight and also talking to Steph. He was getting his pulse on the team, and he was asking me what I was seeing from the team and things we could do that were better. room every day, going to shooting or going to games for the first time in 12-13 years old.”

The main thing Curry did during the downtime was straighten his body. He said he wants to make sure that when Golden State signs him, he comes in fully healthy so he can “take off.”

How will Curry help his brother and Golden State

What Curry brings to the Dubs speaks for itself. Seth ranks 8th all-time in three-point percentage, ahead of his brother Steph, with a career 43.3% from beyond the arc. He brings spacing, movement off the ball and some much needed scoring to the attack need some juice.

“I think everybody in the league knows what I bring to the table as far as my game,” Curry said when asked how he fits into Golden State’s formula.

“I feel like I’m able to spread the floor, make shots, create offense, with my movement. I’m a little underrated on the ball as far as playing the ball and playing the handicap, and creating that attention from the defense. (The Warriors) know what I bring, the league knows what I bring, so I’m just trying to get that as soon as possible.”

Kerr echoed Curry’s assessment of himself.

“He gives us another great scorer. A guy who’s really solid with the ball, a total pro,” Kerr said. With Curry coming into the game and De’Anthony Melton nearing his return from rehab from ACL surgery, the Warriors will have plenty of options at the point guard position moving forward. When asked how he sees the rotation shaking out with such a deep guard rotation, Kerr didn’t share his specific plan, but said nothing is set in stone.

Regardless, Golden State is excited to have Curry and his shooting. And while he and his brother will have to wait a little while to share the court with the same team, he’ll try to boost the 11-10 Warriors in the meantime.
