recently, Devin Booker talked about why Gillespie’s breakthrough comes as no surprise to him.
“It started way before the moment. He’s putting in the work,” Booker said, according to Mark Media of RG.org. “He’s been working all summer. Everybody’s just seeing it now. But we’ve seen it in open gyms. We’ve seen it in practice. So I’m happy for him that he’s been able to show the world what he can do.”
Dillon Brooks also had high praise for the former Denver Nuggets guard, even nicknaming him “Villain Jr.,” taking his own nickname, “Dillon the Villain.”
“He wanted that nickname,” Brooks said. “He plays hard. He has that dog in him. You look at him and you don’t think he’s a basketball player and what not. But he worked all summer. In the training camp, he proved every day that he belongs.”
Many expected the Suns to be bottom this year in light of the Kevin Durant trade during the offseason, especially considering Jaylen Green has only suited up for one game so far.
However, with unsung players like Brooks and Gillespie coming into play, Phoenix has been able to perform above expectations this season.
