Special teams coordinator denies coaching for his job

The The Atlanta Falcons have recently fallen to 4-9 in the 2025 NFL season with a home loss loss to the Seattle Seahawks. With that result, the Falcons are officially eliminated from the playoffs this year, despite the NFC South being by far the worst division in the entire NFL.
On Sunday, nothing went right for Atlanta, but special teams in particular were a disaster, as the Falcons had a field goal blocked and also had a kickoff returned for a touchdown.
This led some to call for the job of Falcons special teams coordinator Marquis Williams, but on Tuesday, Williams himself seemed convinced that it wouldn’t happen.
“I’m not necessarily going to say I’m fighting for my job because that’s the wrong perspective. I want to try to get better at my job,” Williams said, per the Falcons’ Terrin Waack on X, formerly Twitter.
Williams also talked about how the team changes things up on special teams on a weekly basis.
“Every week we change the special teams. … We’re always making changes. We’re always looking to put guys in the best positions to go out there and use their attributes to help the team win,” he said.
Overall, the Falcons’ 2025 season was an unmitigated disaster, with the team starting 3-2 before going on an ugly five-game losing streak, then losing two of the next three after that.
Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. went down with a torn ACL, and Atlanta fans have been clamoring for head coach Raheem Morris’ job for several weeks.
What makes matters worse for the Falcons is that they don’t have their first-round pick in 2026, although the player they selected with last year’s extra pick, James Pierce Jr., has at least played well this season.
The Falcons will close in on the sweet release on Thursday with a road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
