How Jared McCain feels about Daryl Morey’s “confident” sales success

When the news was published that The Philadelphia 76ers traded Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder for the protected 2026 first-round pick plus three seconds, fans immediately marked their calendars for Friday afternoon, when Daryl Morey he would address the media to explain what happened.
Of course, most of what Morey said was obvious; he did not see the movement of the needlethat the team will be active in the buyout market, etc., but one note above the rest stood out to many: the 76ers sold themselves high on McCain.
“I’m pretty confident we sold high. Obviously, time will tell, but the only other high point, and we didn’t want to sell, I’ll be honest,” Morey said. “Teams have been coming at us with aggressive offers for him, and you could say, yeah, it’s because he’s a good player. I agree with that. We thought this return was beyond what we could get for the future value of our franchise. So the only upside would be during his run last season. But otherwise, we feel like we had a good time.”

Understandably, the quote caught the attention of fans across the association, including in Oklahoma City, where McCain himself was asked if Morey was right. While he didn’t go into too much depth in his response, his admission about the trade conversation with Morey is not telling very flattering picture president of basketball operations.
“Yeah, I mean, I didn’t get to talk to him much at all when he called me, so I don’t know,” McCain said.
Retained as the 76ers’ fourth guard for the foreseeable future behind Tyrese Maxey, rookie VJ Edgecomb and Quentin Grimes, McCain’s ceiling in Philly might never be higher than February 2026 if he continued to play occasional minutes off the bench in injury situations. He’ll now join a Shai Gilgeous-Alexander-less Thunder team for the next few weeks and potentially improve his stock even more before a long and healthy playoff run, a situation that could make Morey’s words look really bad in the relatively short term.
