A scenario that will ’embarrass’ Dwight Howard for New York

On Tuesday evening, The New York Knicks won NBA Cup 2025 beating the San Antonio Spurs in comeback fashion in Las Vegas. After the game, the Knicks raised eyebrows by choosing not to hang a banner at Madison Square Garden for the victory, breaking the precedent set by the Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks, who won the first two games of the season.

One person who was taken aback by the decision was none other than the former NBA big man Dwight Howardwho went to X, formerly Twitter, yes convey your thoughts.

“I’ll be embarrassed second-hand if the Knicks don’t raise the NBA Cup banner and then make it to the championship this year… Celebrate your wins while you can,” Howard wrote.

Indeed, many fans considered it rich that the Knicks, a team that hadn’t won an NBA championship in more than 50 years, thought they were above hanging the NBA Cup banner when the Lakers and Bucks, who each won an NBA championship this decade, did.

The good news for the Knicks is that they seem to have a pretty clear path to the NBA Finals this year, as their supposed biggest competition in the Eastern Conference, the Cleveland Cavaliers, are currently falling apart at the seams.

The Knicks currently trail the Detroit Pistons by 2.5 games for the top seed in the Eastern Conference, but the general consensus seems to be that New York is the more reliable playoff threat between the two, as evidenced by their win over the Pistons in last year’s playoffs.

Either way, the Knicks will next take the floor Thursday night against the Indiana Pacers on the road. That game, a rematch of last year’s Eastern Conference Finals, is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM ET.
