Adam Ottavino in the race for president of Colorado

The The Colorado Rockies have decided to move on from Bill Schmidt and begin the search for their next president of baseball operations. Although a reset seemed necessary, the renovation of the Colorado headquarters did not begin as planned.

The The Rockies’ top two running backs are no longer under consideration from Monday. That’s why the organization starts to think outside the box. Owner Dick Montfort met with Adam Ottavino about the presidential vacancy, via Tim Healy of the Boston Globe.

Ottavino played in the MLB for 15 years, most recently with the New York Yankees for three games in 2025. He has seen everything the league has to offer and that experience should help him as he prepares for life after baseball. However, it would be a huge leap of faith for the Rockies to turn to Ottawa a year after he was an active player.

The relief pitcher has a solid education from the Northeast. But he never served in the front office, let alone assumed the role of president. Ottavino would have to learn quickly on the fly. Although the Rockies haven’t been competitive, they expect to turn things around. The expectations placed on Ottavin’s shoulders would be too high.

What makes his meeting with Montfort more shocking is the fact that Colorado had two finalists in mind for the position. Arizona Diamondbacks assistant general manager Amiel Sawdaie and Cleveland Guardians assistant general manager Matt Foreman held final interviews with the Rockies. And yet, Montfort has decided that neither will be the next PoBO.

Maybe it will be Ottavino. While most of the industry would consider that too much, Montfort certainly hasn’t ruled it out.
