Tyrese Maxey isn’t fazed by the referees’ scrutiny
There are a few seconds left on the clock. THE Sixers and the Rockets are bound (115-115) after a missed shot by Kevin Durant and the ball is in hand Tyrese McKay.
The playmaker spent the fourth quarter outrunning Houston’s defense, sneaking to the rim. The strategy doesn’t change and the All-Star accelerates and then passes Amen Thompson for a layup. Kevin Durant came to the rescue and against his opponent, without any of the referees blowing his whistle.
Problem: The ball touched the backboard when KD touched it, and the basket should therefore have been upheld. After the match, the officials admitted the mistake, but for now it was overtime.
What did Tyrese McKay say to himself? “If we had to play overtime” he smiled. “And win this period. I was surprised because I put the ball on the board. But it happens, everyone is human.”
“It was a five minute match”
And the Sixers managed to regroup, winning overtime (128-122) to stay in 5th place in the Eastern Conference with 24 wins and 19 losses.
“Trendon (Watford) was important because he told us it’s a five-minute game now. Joe (Embiid) also told us that these things happen and you just have to win. I told myself it shouldn’t happen, but it did. But we showed our resilience. These are tough games to win. We fall behind, we come back, then we come back, we come back again and we think we’re going to win.
But thanks to the triple-double of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey’s efficiency at the end of the match (36 points on 15/28 shooting, 10 total assists), that’s what happened to Philadelphia, which is smiling again after the nightmare of last season. And the hot crowd at the Xfinity Mobile Arena managed to quickly forget this illegal counter.
