Bulls’ Perfect Michael Porter Jr. Trade Offer To the Nets
It certainly feels like it The Chicago Bulls are at a crossroads right now. They are at a crucial point in their rebuild, as they have plenty of contracts expiring on books that they could try to package together to finally land their main star. The Bulls have been treading water so much over the past few years that the front office had to feel a greater sense of urgency to finally get someone they wanted to build around.
As talented as Josh Giddei is, the 6’8″ guard from Australia isn’t good enough, at least not yet, to be the mainstay of their rebuild. But at this point, the Bulls were content to play it slow. But then again, knowing how many trade deals they have on their payroll, now seems like the time to be aggressive – with Michael Porter Jr. is emerging as a potential trade target for Chicago.
Jake Fisher of the Stein Line noticed that The Bulls have been interested in trading for Porter in the past; were reportedly in serious talks with the Denver Nuggets to bring Porter in a trade that would send Zach LaVine to the Mile High City.
Maybe it is The Bulls are interested in Porter againand the Brooklyn Nets certainly seems interested in cashing in on Porter as a trade asset in the midst of his career-best season as the number one option.
That said, this is the perfect trade offer from the Bulls to the Nets for the 27-year-old forward.
The Bulls add shooting guard Michael Porter Jr. over theoretical wing production
Chicago Bulls acquire: Michael Porter Jr.
Brooklyn Nets Acquire: Zach Collins, Kevin Huerter, Noah Essengue, 2026 POR first round pick (lottery protected for 2026 and 2027, becomes second round pick if not carried over until 2027)

The The Nets need to know that Porter isn’t this good in a winning team; the only reason he’s averaging over 25 points per game is because he’s making all the shots on a Brooklyn side that lacks shot-making and shot-making skills. On a good team, one can expect a similar level of production from Porter as he did with the Nuggets.
But the Bulls can talk themselves into making Porter their number one option, at least for the time being. Porter is a 6’10” forward who can get a shot from all three levels at any given time, and with Giddy as the team’s primary playmaker for the foreseeable future, the 27-year-old forward could see his numbers stay largely the same in the Windy City.
Bulls, of course, have to lower their expectations. Having Porter around won’t guarantee them a winning season. Replacing him would not even guarantee a place in the tournament this year. But he’s a good piece to have around as Chicago gets closer and closer to building a winning side — a process they shouldn’t rush.
Chicago, however, has to admit that there is merit to improving the roster bit by bit. Requiring projects to be selected to appear is not a reliable way to create a competitive list. They won gold with Matas Bouzelisbut their draft picks haven’t been very good in recent years.
Dalen Terry barely plays. Patrick Williams showed flashesbut his contract turned into one of the worst in the NBA. Williams, in particular, is a scouting cautionary tale. Sure, he has the frame of a typical NBA wing. But his motor comes and goes, and he’s not nearly skilled enough in any aspect of the game to make it baffling that the Bulls rated him so highly to begin with.
And then the Bulls, seemingly not learning from past mistakes, drafted Noah Essenge with the 12th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Essenge was another wing with exceptional physical tools, but his overall game is very raw, and now he’s on the shelf with a shoulder injury that would keep him out for the rest of the season.
The idea of who Esenge could become is far more enticing than what he’s portrayed as a basketball player at this point in his career. And at this point, the Bulls have to learn that just because someone has all the physical tools in the world, that doesn’t automatically translate into making a winning impact.
While it would be a bit puzzling for the Bulls to give up Essengue this early in his career, it’s not like they have other pieces to try to swing in a potential trade for Porter. Bouzelis is untouchable at the moment. The Nets would not benefit from either Nikola Vucevic or Kobe White. Giddy is someone the Bulls treat as a foundation.
The Nets could then talk themselves into how Esenge could become a real hand and glove for the young, defensive-minded team they’re building there in Brooklyn. Brooklyn loved the 2025 NBA draft class so much that they made five selections in the first round alone. It is also worth noting that The Nets had Essengue in their sightsso they might feel like trading Porter for a package headlined by a recent lottery pick is worth it.
As for Kevin Huerter and Zach Collins, their contracts expire at the end of the 2025-26 season. This frees up even more room for the Nets to either make moves in free agency, or relegate them to trades where they acquire bad contracts in exchange for compensation.
The Bulls also surrender a first-round pick from the Portland Trail Blazers in this deal, but that pick is lottery-protected for the next two years anyway. Portland probably won’t make the playoffs for the next two years given the way the West is and how their team is ravaged by injuries. It will most likely be a second round pick, so this should soften the blow for the Bulls.
Ultimately, this trade doesn’t move the needle much for the Bulls. But this at least signals that they are up to something. And with not much else on the books for Chicago, they could be a more attractive destination in free agency the more talent they already have on the roster — so Porter would help.
