Dallas is suing NHL stars over long-running arena feud

The The Dallas Mavericks are hoping for some big things this seasonwith rookie Cooper Flagg at the helm. Dallas, however, also makes a big splash not on the basketball court, but in the courtroom. They are Mavericks another professional team is suing in the city, Dallas Stars.

“Late Tuesday morning, Mavericks ownership filed a 253-page petition in Texas Business Court to enjoin Stars ownership, seeking legal finality in a breach-of-contract dispute the Mavericks filed in October 2024,” Dallas Morning News reporters Brad Townsend and Lia Assimakopoulos wrote.

The Stars and Mavericks share the same space in Dallas. Mavericks owners believe the NHL franchise has not done enough to help improve the facility.

“The Mavericks allege that the Stars violated a clause in their 1998 franchise agreement requiring their corporate headquarters to be located in the city of Dallas, while also alleging in an injunction that the Stars interfered with further maintenance and improvements to the American Airlines Center.” Zvezda’s headquarters and training ground have been located in Frisco since 2003,” the writers add.

These two teams have been playing at the American Airlines Center since 2001, the newspaper reported.

The Mavericks intend to settle the matter in court

The The Mavericks and Stars have an arena contractto play there for the next few years. The Dallas NBA team is considering building a new arena in the city.

“The success of the Mavericks and Stars is important to fans across the Metroplex, and the outcome of this litigation will not affect either team from playing at the American Airlines Center now or until the end of the teams’ current leases in 2031,” the Mavericks said in a statement to the newspaper.

“Fans of both franchises should have every expectation that the experience of coming to support their teams will continue as always.”

However, there seems to be bad blood between these teams for now.

“To be clear,” the lawsuit states, “the stars are holding American Airlines Center hostage.”

The Mavericks are 1-3 so far this NBA season. The Stars are 5-3-1 in the NHL this season.
