Former Hawks 1st round pick gets G League shot with LA

The The Los Angeles Lakers are down back down to Earth over the past week, losing two of their last three games the way they hit, including Wednesday night’s shellacking of hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Los Angeles is still 8-4, but it’s clear the team still has a ways to go to reach true contender status in the Western Conference.
Recently, the Lakers made such a move it can potentially pay dividends with the depth of protection at some point down the line.
“The South Bay Lakers plan to acquire former Atlanta Hawks guard Kobe Bufkin, sources told ESPN. Bufkin was the 15th pick in the 2023 draft out of the University of Michigan. Bufkin was traded from the ATL to BKN and made the G League roster after being waived last month,” former ESPN NBA Insider Dave reported on Twitter.
Bufkin played sporadic minutes during his time in Atlanta, mostly becoming known for his defense rather than his offense, and as McMenamin mentioned, he never got a chance to play for the Nets before opting out.
The Lakers could certainly use some extra guard depth in their locker room, given the fact that Gabe Vincent can’t stay healthy and JJ Redick hasn’t shown much confidence in any of Los Angeles’ other guards.
Either way, the Lakers take to the court Friday night to host the New Orleans Pelicans. That game is expected to start at 8:00 PM ET.
