Former HC stops Devin Booker trade for Jimmy Butler

Devin Booker was the face of the Phoenix Suns franchise since emerging as a star in his second year in the league. However, it sounds like things could have gone differently, as the former head coach claims he prevented the organization from trading Booker for Jimmy Butler.

During an appearance on Bucks+ Audio, the former Suns head coach Earl Watsonwho coached the team in the 2016-17 season, claims which he prevented former team owner Robert Sarver since trading Booker to the Chicago Bulls for Butler. Watson said he threatened to resign as head coach immediately if the deal went through. It never passed.

“I said, ‘If you’re trading Devin Booker, I’m going to resign tonight,'” Watson said.

Although Earl Watson was the head coach for only one season, his decision to prevent the Devin Booker trade from happening seems to have remained intact for the next nine years. It also doesn’t appear that the Suns plan to move Booker anytime soon, as the four-time All-Star is one of the best guards in the league and a mainstay of building a front office.

But what could have been? The league’s entire schedule might have played out differently if Devin Booker and Jimmy Butler had traded places in 2016-17. Booker would become the new face of the Bulls with Derrick Rose leaving for the New York Knicks. Meanwhile, Butler would have a chance to play as the face of the Suns and could have a chance to play alongside Chris Paul when he joins Phoenix in 2020.

in all Devin Booker stayed with the franchise and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. He’s been as consistent as ever this season, averaging 25.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game while shooting 45.6% from the field and shooting 30.4% from the three-point line.
