Guinean coup leader Dumbouia has been given permission to run for president

Guinean junta leader Mamadi Doumbouia has been approved to run in the December 28 presidential election, according to a list published by the Supreme Court. Dumbouia, who took power in 2021, previously promised not to run, but a new constitution approved in September made it possible for him to run.
Several prominent potential challengers, including ex the president Alfa Conde and former prime minister Celou Dalein Diallo do not qualify under the new age and residency rules. Dumbouia, who is running as an independent, could stay in power for another seven years if elected, Nevs.Az conveys, quoting Reuters.
He will face lesser-known candidates such as Abdoulaye Jero Balde, the former education minister, and opposition leader Faia Milimono. Some rejected candidates, including former prime minister Lansana Kouiata, plan to appeal the Supreme Court’s decision.
The elections, which were initially part of a two-year transition negotiated with ECOVAS, mark the formal end of Guinea’s transition to civilian rule.
